Göttingen Diversity Research Institute

Welcome to the website of the Göttingen Diversity Research Institute!

The Göttingen Diversity Research Institute studies processes of diversification and their consequences. The Institute’s primary aim is to develop research on diversity and processes of diversification, both theoretically and empirically. We focus in particular on organisational issues.
Other areas of interest include the micro level, the macro level and the symbolic order.

We are interested in the following questions:

  • How, when and why do organisations respond to diversity?
  • Which societal processes and tendencies lead to diversification and diversity?
  • How, and to what extent, are individuals affected by different dimensions of diversity?
  • How are diversity management policies perceived by universities, businesses, governments, the press, etc.?

The Institute also advises the University of Göttingen in implementing and developing its research-based and research-oriented diversity strategy.

New Research Network „Modes of Organisational Diversity“

The German Research Foundation (DFG) is funding a new research network Modes of Organisational Diversity: Theory, Empiricism, and Practices for a duration of three years. The network is based at the Göttingen Diversity Research Institute and led by Dr. Julia Gruhlich and Prof. Dr. Andrea D. Bührmann. The network aims to strengthen the integration of German-speaking diversity research into the international discourse on diversity and organisation. A further goal is to systematise and further develop disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to open up new perspectives on the relationship between diversity and organisation. Another key focus is to foster exchange among researchers in German-speaking countries to strengthen the connection between diversity and organisational research and inspire new collaborative initiatives.

More information can be found at the network’s website

IDenti-T: New Network to Explore Evolving Identities in Democratic Transformations

The Göttingen Diversity Research Institute is proud to announce the launch of the IDenti-T network, a groundbreaking initiative that brings together researchers from four esteemed European universities to strengthen interdisciplinary dialogue on evolving identities in times of democratic transformations.
IDenti-T aims to address a growing disconnect between citizens' lived experiences, which are increasingly shaped by fluid, fragmented and contested identifications, and the structures of European democracies which presuppose homogeneous and stable identities. As an ENLIGHT Thematic Network co-funded by the European Union, IDenti-T revolves around three key objectives: developing innovative educational materials, building an interdisciplinary platform for dialogue and co-creation, and creating a sustainable community of practice.
Led by researchers from the Universities of the Basque Country, Bordeaux, Galway (lead), and Göttingen, the IDenti-T network will contribute to ENLIGHT's flagship domains of Equity, Culture and Creativity, Climate Change, and the Digital Revolution. By fostering public engagement and supporting students and early-career scholars, the network seeks to reimagine democracy in a way that supports, includes, and embraces diverse identities.
Funding for the IDenti-T network will run from November 2025 to October 2027.
