EXAMINATION


Individual essay based on group work. Group size: 2–5 people; maximum length: 15 pages.


Examination prerequisite: Written examination (90 minutes, after first part).



EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS


Written examination:



  • Knowledge of the basic experimental paradigms discussed in the course.

  • Knowledge of mathematical methods for analyzing individual decisions and social interaction in those paradigms.

  • Knowledge of related stylized behavioral economics results.


Essay:



  • Describe the motivation and goal of the research project.

  • Present the related literature.

  • Formulate the precise research question and experimental design, its relation to existing experiments, theoretical considerations, and testable hypotheses.

  • Prepare the experiment instructions.

LEARNING OUTCOMES AND CORE SKILLS


At the end of this course, students will have a clear understanding of:



  • the methodology of experimental economics,

  • the range of questions that can be analyzed in economic experiments,

  • various experimental paradigms and related stylized facts,

  • the practical issues involved in designing and running economic experiments,

  • the analysis of data generated by economic experiments,

  • the preparation of a project proposal.



CONTENTS


The course starts with an introduction to the methodology of experimental economics, illustrated by a varied range of economic experiments designed to explore individual and group behavior in economic games. It also covers the elicitation of economic preferences and basic statistical techniques for analyzing experimental data.


In the second part, participants work in groups. They identify a topic for further experimental investigation, develop a full experimental design, and present it orally in class. A pilot study may also be carried out.
