Dr. Andreas Kronz
Position: Head of the EPMA Laboratory
Area of expertise: standardization and reference materials for in situ analytical techniques, geospeedometry, climate archives, archaeometry: glass & archaeometallurgy
Research Interests
My research centers on quantitative in situ microanalysis of minerals, glasses, and other solid materials by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and scanning electron microscopy. I focus on analytical methodology: optimizing measurement protocols and developing and characterizing reference materials. This work supports accurate major- and trace-element data at high spatial resolution. Examples include low element concentrations in quartz and synthetic and natural reference glasses and minerals for microanalysis.
I apply these methods in several areas:
1) Element zoning and diffusion profiles, used as geospeedometers to constrain the rates of geological processes.
2) Trace-element signatures of minerals, used for provenance and petrochronology.
3) Biogenic carbonates such as coralline algae, which serve as high-resolution climate archives.
4) Archaeometry, in particular historical glass compositions and archaeometallurgical processes.
Since 1998 I have headed the EPMA laboratory at the Geoscience Center in Göttingen. I now manage GoeLEM, the Göttingen Laboratory for Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy. GoeLEM combines a field-emission electron probe microanalyzer, a field-emission SEM with EDS, EBSD, and cathodoluminescence, and automated light microscopy. Together they support correlative, multi-scale analysis for research groups from the geosciences and many other disciplines. I also teach electron microscopy and microprobe analysis.
